Synthetic Felt

Synthetic felt is composed of man-made or artificial fibers, predominantly polyester, and other materials such as viscose, nylon, acrylic, or a blend of these fibers. Polyester refers to a broad category of synthetic polymers, with PET (polyethylene terephthalate) being the most common type—interestingly, it's the same material used for manufacturing plastic bottles, and it is a recyclable material. Originally, synthetic felt served as a cost-effective substitute for natural felt, chosen primarily for its affordability. 

The distinction between the two was quite apparent in the past. However, advancements in fiber technology and manufacturing processes have significantly narrowed this gap. Modern synthetic felts can often match the appearance and texture of natural felt, elevating their status in the industry. They are now integral to design initiatives, exclusive collections, and everyday usage. It can be customized to meet specific customer requirements and is available in various materials. Here are key features of synthetic felt:

• Lightweight and Durable: Unlike traditional asphalt felt, synthetic felt is very lightweight, making it easy to transport and install. Its superior quality provides an extra layer of protection between the roof deck and shingles. 
• Moisture Resistance: Synthetic felt is resistant to mildew and fungal growth due to its non-absorptive nature, which helps prevent wrinkling and buckling, ensuring a better-looking roof. This also makes it more durable compared to traditional felt. 
• Tear Resistance: Synthetic products have excellent tear resistance and will not tear and break from screws and nails penetrating it, providing better protection against potential damage.
• Longevity and Cost-Effectiveness: Synthetic underlayment is expected to last longer than traditional felt underlayment, making it a cost-effective choice in the long run. While the initial cost may be higher, its durability and performance make it a worthwhile investment.
